    Majangella moultoni - Moss Mantis

The Moss Mantis (Majangella moultoni). Being a mantis it is naturally a predator, and one with complete ambush on its side. When it moves it rocks from side to side in very pronounced manner, just like the mossy tendrils hanging below the branches in its habitat. This enables it to move from one place to another without attracting the attention of predatory birds, lizards and frogs.

This is a very rare species and one of my prized specimens to have and breed. They are "finicky" nervous and like privacy quiet and warm humid environment. These will soon be available for sale though very rare and very expensive.

    Description:

A medium-sized praying mantis perfectly evolved to be a master of camouflage. 55mm in length. Body consist of different shades of green to camouflage it better in its habitat. Even its body contains irregularities on the thorax and abdomen to blend in with moss. It also has unique eyes as seen in photo 4 and 6. However, the camouflage is quite useless when I found it in the dining hall where it feeds on the nocturnal insects attracted to the artificial light. A leftover of an ant alate is seen in its claw.

    Habitat:

In forest vegetation of Maliau Basin, near Tawau town, Sabah.

Notes:  This is a very rare species and one of my prized specimens to have and breed. They are "finicky" nervous and like privacy quiet and warm humid environment. These will soon be captive bred for research though very rare
