  • Deroplatys gorochovi dead leaf mantis NEW species

This species of dead leaf mantis is native to southern Vietnam

Deroplatys gorochovi Anisyutkin, 1998 (Figs. 8A; 8B; 8F; 8I; 8K;8N; 9A) Deroplatys gorochovi Anisyutkin, 1998: 95-99 (2♂; ♀); Ehrmann 2002: 119 (♂, ♀). Type material: Holotype. 1 ♂, Vietnam, prov. Gia Lai, 20 km N of Kannack, Buon Luoi, 22-31.111. 1995 A. Gorochov. Paratypes: 1♂ same locality, 3-11X1.1993; 1♀, same data, “collected as last instar nymph, moulted to imago in laboratory in beginning of January 1994 ” A. Gorochov. Diagnostic features and description: see Anisyutkin (1998). Distribution. Vietnam Remarks. The external morphologies resemble the Deroplatys truncata, but minor differences can be found in the male hindwing’s apex and the genitalia. Compared with Deroplatys truncata, the titilator (paa) has a very different shape. D. truncata has a narrower and curvier paa compared to D. gorochovi. The male hindwing’s apex is more acute in Deroplatys truncata. Although it is not mentioned in the original description, however, it seems the ratio of pronotum prozona and metazona of the female can be used to distinguish between the females of the two species. The length of the metazona of female Deroplatys truncata is three times longer than its prozona, whereas the D. gorochovi are equal to three times longer or less. Therefore, without examining more specimens, this characteristic can be used as an identification key to separating two species.
